The notion of systems integration and dynamic performance is increasingly used in façade design. A series of studies of modular facade systems and dynamic systems were performed as part of the Ph.D research on building envelopes. The first series of studies examined the envelope as an entity, a habitable space that enhances the human environment and supports the building performance. Another series of studies describe a new design idea of an open modular façade concept that addresses the opportunities for integration. The modular façade concept consists of modules that represent each one of the selected performance criteria, such as the need for daylight, visual comfort with the use of shading systems and also energy production with photovoltaic cells. Focusing on dynamic facades, a third series of studies describe a dynamic façade system that protects from direct solar radiation and reflects glare-free sunlight to the ceiling, increasing daylight levels in areas away from the building’s perimeter zone. Advanced performance analysis is based on Radiance / Daysim simulations. Results are compared to a reference static façade system to explore the impact of advanced fenestration systems on daylighting levels and electric energy consumption picture colors.
